Mobile Betting: Christmas
With the so-called Justice Collective’s Hillsborough tribute single, He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother, a long-time front-runner, a shoe-in to be the Christmas Number 1 single (despite the popularity of X Factor winner James Arthur and his now trademark rendition of Impossible), attention this year among mobile gamblers looking for festive betting fun with our partners at gambling4mobiles has turned to other markets.
It used to be that the only possibility in terms of novelty bets was whether there will be a white Christmas in the UK. Now, not only is this one of several markets available, but we can also bet on whether snow will be present in a host of places around the world! The odds on Christmas snow in London are currently around 3/1, with the same price available for Belfast and Derry across the Irish Sea. Manchester is slightly shorter, at 5/2 while, further north, Glasgow is only 2/1. Looking further afield, Paddy Power offer prices on Paris (10/1), Madrid (14/1), Barcelona (22/1) and the apparent snow-free zone that is Rome at a whopping 50/1.
Meanwhile, for TV soap fans wishing to bet on the top show at Christmas, there’s very little value in betting on the favourite, Eastenders, given the very short odds of 1/7, with rivals Coronation Street and Emmerdale being 4/1 and 20/1 respectively.
Perhaps the most amusing market of all is Paddy Power’s ‘The Queen’s Speech – First Cliche’ with a list of contenders – some considerably more likely than others – from which we must choose what will be the first to crop up in the traditional speech. As much as the emphasis here for online gambling firms is to offer some tongue-in-cheek betting opportunities to their customers, and attract new ones for whom sports betting might (at least initially) seem intimidating, the odds makers must still do their homework.
From the selection given the favourite is ‘Olympics’ at 13/8, with ‘Jubilee’ (7/4), the usual ‘My husband and I’ (4/1) and ‘William’ (7/1) amongst the favourites. ‘X Factor’ seems an unlikely inclusion and is priced at 66/1, with ‘Abdicate’ available at an oddly short 16/1.
