Rise of Mobile Gambling in the U.K.
It shouldn't really come as a surprise, given today's combination of constantly improving and evolving mobile technology and the fact that we have so many opportunities when it comes to leisure time, but in the U.K. we are gambling 'remotely' more than we used to. Statistics from a study carried out by the U.K. Gambling Commission recently show that we are taking full advantage of the technology used by operators to facilitate gambling on the move via smartphones, tablets and other remote devices.
In 2009 a U.K. survey found that, overall, 55.2% of those questioned had gambled during the previous month, and the figure is 56.7% in 2011. However, the most significant increase, reflecting the considerable technological advancements we have seen over two years, has come in mobile gambling, with 11.8% of those in the latest survey engaging in some sort of remote gambling activity since September 2024.
The favourites for mobile users are bingo and the National Lottery, while sports betting and casino operators seem to attract new mobile customers by the day thanks to the sheer numbers in the UK who now routinely use mobile devices - last year, for example, the number of people using smartphones to access the internet rose from 9 million to 13.5 million!
These figures have prompted the government to seek further improvements for both U.K. companies and their domestic clients in terms of competition and protection. This is good news for those in the U.K. who enjoy mobile gambling as operators keen to demonstrate adherence to key regulations and security will also be offering some great deals in their efforts to beat the competition.
