Facebook Gamble
Facebook may be a global phenomenon because it allows us to connect with anyone from anywhere and it revolutionised social networking but, with success and the inevitable expansion it brings, it was only a matter of time before the online powerhouse threw its hat into the gambling arena.
Perhaps predictably, the first place Facebook chose to open the betting, as it were, is the UK due to the ‘healthy’ high level of sports betting and online casino games we’re into and the rate at which mobile users are joining in the fun. To this end Facebook is involved in negotiations with numerous online operators that provide services to the domestic market.
Nothing has been set in stone in terms of a schedule but with such an enormous captive audience already in place we can expect to see partnerships materialise to facilitate playing poker and the usual games for real money in the near future.
Apparently the plan is to offer eight licenses, with much of the preparation involving consultants, experts, affiliates and major online gambling operators having taken place during the past year or so.
Nowadays online gambling sees the mobile sector as the most promising and potentially valuable part of the family, and indeed this specific group of customers could benefit most from Facebook’s branching out into real money wagers and games.
Of the staggering 800 million or so worldwide active users, around 350 million access the site via a mobile device and, with the typical user averaging 130 friends, tapping into (and in turn expanding) the gambling fraternity is clearly a means of adding yet more power to Facebook’s virtual elbow.
