UK Online Gambling as Healthy as Ever
Despite the stories of large scale economic doom and gloom among high street stores and well-known, established names, online gambling in the UK remains both an enormous and, perhaps surprisingly, healthy industry. Indeed growth during the last five years has been at record level, not least due to the proliferation of mobile devices which, crucially, introduced a brand new client type in the shape of those for whom the mobile medium is their first convenient access point to any kind of gambling. As well as the more experienced online gamblers, gambling4mobiles now caters for this new breed of modern gambling fan by connecting them with mobile casinos, bingo and poker, for example.
H2 Gambling Capital brought out a report recently that investigated the global online gambling market, with the UK numbers indicating that revenue in the UK alone has increased by a staggering 80% in the past five years. Moreover, in 2012 the UK market’s gross win reached €3.1 billion, representing 14.3% of the planet’s total.
Clearly this is a juicy enough source of revenue to attract the interest of those countries that have hitherto not experienced levels of online gambling activity anywhere close to the UK and other market giants.
The USA, meanwhile, has a similar gambling tradition to its ally across the Atlantic but, thanks to the legal issues that began when the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) was signed by President George Bush in 2006, accounts for only around 11% of the online global gambling gross win!
This much criticised move has since been addressed by what most would say is imperative federal legislation, as well as individual states subsequently being able to police their own affairs, passing bills to legislate online gambling.
Ultimately the ideal scenario will be laws and co-operation that afford countries from around the world to engage in joint ventures with operators regardless of jurisdiction, thus creating a streamlined, well regulated global online gambling market.
